Gorilla trekking permits are highly sought after, so it is important to book well in advance, especially during the peak season from May to November.
2. Understand Permit Limitations
In Rwanda, there are about 20 mountain gorilla families, but only 13 habituated families are available for trekking. Each gorilla group allows a maximum of 8 visitors per day, making permits limited.
3. Choose Your Travel Dates Carefully
If you are an African traveler, particularly from East Africa, visiting during the low season can be a great option since discounted permit rates are often available.

5. Prepare for the Trek
For a comfortable trekking experience, wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes and long pants to protect yourself from vegetation and insects. A rain jacket is recommended in case of sudden showers. During the dry season (December–April), the terrain is generally easier to navigate, while in the rainy season (May–November) the trails can become slippery. It is also advisable to bring sunglasses and a hat for sun protection during the drier months.

What to wear for gorilla trek Rwanda?
You need to wear a long sleeved shirt and Long trousers (can be either Khaki zip-up trousers or jeans) in fact if you can get waterproof trousers wear those. Both long trousers and long sleeved shirts protect you from branches, nettles, thorns or anything else that can prick/scratch you.
