5 Days Kivu Belt Road Classic
Itinerary overview
Rwanda is renowned for its blue tourism, even though it doesn’t have a coastline. The country boasts vast lakes, including the Crater Lake atop Bisoke, Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, the lakes within Akagera National Park, Lake Muhazi, and Lake Kivu. This 5-day Kivu Belt Road Classic itinerary allows you to enjoy the stunning attractions along the lake shores, hike the islands in Lake Kivu, and experience primate trekking.
Upon your arrival, you will meet our professional driver guide at the airport. From there, we will continue our journey towards Rubavu, a charming tourist town situated in the north of Lake Kivu. As we follow the road, it will take us to the base of the majestic volcanoes, providing us with spectacular views of the High Mountains in the northern part of the country. During the trip, we will make a stopover at Ibere rya Bigogwe, a dramatic mountain that many people like to see when traveling to Rubavu.
Overnight at Rubavu
You will have breakfast at the hotel in the morning, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the calm and pristine waters of Lake Kivu. The day’s activities will include visiting the islands while enjoying boat rides. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit Nyamyumba hot spring, a natural hot water spring.

In the afternoon, you will visit local communities and interact with them.
Overnight at Rubavu
After breakfast in the morning, you will follow the Kivu Belt road towards Karongi town. You will visit Napoleon Island, which is famous for its large bat population.
In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to attend a coffee tour in Karongi. During the tour, you will experience a coffee plantation and learn about the coffee processing methods.
Overnight at Karongi
After breakfast, we will continue our journey through the Kivu Belt road towards Nyungwe National Park. As we follow the road, we will be treated to spectacular views all along Lake Kivu while descending some of the thousand hills. Upon arriving at Nyungwe, you will have the opportunity to trek one of the beautiful primate species that are habituated near the park headquarters in Gisakura. Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 primate species.
While enjoying the canopy walk, you will get to experience the fascinating sight of primate species jumping from branch to branch of the trees, adding to the unique and memorable adventure.
Overnight at Gisakura
In the morning, after having breakfast at the hotel, you will visit Kamiranzovu Waterfall, one of Africa’s most beautiful waterfalls, flowing from Kamiranzovu Swamp.
After this breathtaking experience, you will continue your journey towards Kigali. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will have the opportunity to do some shopping. Lunch will be provided on the way.
